W sobotę 27 marca 2010 r. w wieku 89 lat, zmarł w Moskwie siódmy szachowy mistrz świata (w latach 1957-58), Wasyli Smysłow. Przyczyną śmierci była niewydolność krążenia. Oprócz szachów, drugą pasją Jego życia była muzyka. Był obdarzony wspaniałym operowym głosem i przez pewien czas miał poważny dylemat, jaką wybrać profesję - śpiew, czy szachy. Ostatecznie po nieudanej próbie zaangażowania się do Teatru Wielkiego, górę wzięły szachy, w których święcił najwieksze triumfy, łącznie ze zdobyciem tytułu mistrza świata. Szachy światowe poniosły niepowetowaną stratę.
